Open House & First Meeting of 2011!

Visit Global Justice at Open House on Sunday, 01/23 at table 1027!

We also have a meet and greet on Monday, 01/24 in Rudder 404 from 8-9pm!

Challenge yourself to think:

Why should we care when other people suffer if it doesn’t directly affect us?

Can you place value of a life or compare acts of service?

What is more vital: ending poverty or violations of human rights?

Why does it matter where our products come from and who made them?

Should outside governments intervene when human rights violations are being violated?

What’s the current most important human rights situation from a U.S. foreign policy standpoint? From a moral standpoint?

Creating a Camp

Seventh grade students in Jerusalem, Israel were given a task similar to the one we thought about last meeting.  They were asked by FAST, The Foundation for Achieving Seamless Territory: Israel/Palestine, to design a refugee camp according to UN regulations.  They asked the students to think about what it would take to create a camp that would last for a hundred years.  The point of the exercise was to show the lack of sustainability of these camps in addressing the long-term needs of the displaced individuals.
Find out what it takes to actually design a refugee camp according to UN regulations at:

Pakistan Flood

At this very moment, millions of innocent people in Pakistan are struggling to survive due to the disastrous flooding in all four provinces of the country. The U.N. estimates that based on the number of people affected (20 million), Pakistan’s flood disaster is worse than the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the 2005 Kashmir earthquake and the 2010 Haiti earthquake combined.

With the death toll figuring 1600 and the number of individuals displaced reaching 20 million, the floodwaters continue to rise, as do these figures, mercilessly. 800,000 people have been cut off by floods and are only reachable by air. With over 17 million acres of fertile land being submerged in floodwater, and 200,000 livestock killed, the agricultural damages alone reach more than an estimate of $2.9 billion.

UN and other aid agencies have estimated and warned the outbreak of diseases such as gastroenteritis, diarrhea, and skin diseases such as scabies due to the lack of clean drinking water, posing a threat to the flood victims. Cases of cholera have already been reported in regions of Nawshera. 40,000 children are left susceptible to chronic water-borne diseases.

With 1/5 of the country submerged (roughly the size of Florida), and nearly a month into the floods, locals are still battling through and trying to prevent their villages from being lost to these vast unforgiving waters.

Light a candle in remembrance of those that have lost their lives to the floods and to show support for survivors who are struggling.

GJ Informational: First Meeting of Fall 2010

Tonight was the first official gathering of Global Justice 2010. It was really nice to see all of the old and new faces! The meeting was very laid back and more of an informational, so if you could not make it, no worries. It was a meet and greet that included officer introductions, Global Justice passions and missions, and cookie cake!

Stay informed by visiting all of our sites and reading our emails to find out when the next meeting is. And bring money for dues before the end of September ($25 for one semester and $40 for both semesters — an awesome t-shirt will be included with your dues).

We look forward to seeing you there!
